The Shadow & Shines release their official music video "I Ain't So Bad", an ethereal melody with a lot of meaning.
Earnest lyrics, soft harmonies, and intricate guitar picking give this song such a presence. Simple with minimal instrumentation, yet haunting with an ambiance electric guitar howling in the background.
Hillary from the duo opens up on the meaning behind the lyrics.
“ This song really has a lot of significance for me. I’m sure a lot of people will think it is about a troubled relationship, but it's not about a troubled relationship with another person. It's about a troubled relationship with self. At the time, when I wrote the lyrics, I was in a vulnerable place going through anxiety and depression. Often times you carry those emotions and feel like you are not good enough or worthy or love.
I wanted the lyrics to have a sense of confusion, of bouncing back and forth between drowning in sadness and escaping into the illusion of an unhealthy love story. When you are going through something like this, it is difficult to tell the difference between reality and the lies your mind is telling you. I wanted the song to depict that. It really took me out of my comfort zone to share this side of myself with the world. However, I think it is important to shed light on mental wellness and create a space for people to share their struggles and experiences.” – Hillary Lerch
The pair continued sharing their intimate side by filming the video as a vintage home movie. Creating dreamy cinematic sadness as a moving collage comprised of archive footage and somber shots of the duo. Shooting scenes of themselves separately and not together was chosen to give an air of loneliness and isolation that is mirrored in the lyrics. The video reflects that combination of fantasy and reality to which the song rests on.
